Traveling to Japan?

Keep in mind:

  • Many people have asked me when the best time to visit Japan is. Instead of the best time, I can share the times not to visit:

    • Golden Week holidays that is usually held around the first week of May

    • Obon holidays that is usually held for a week in July or August

    • Peak of summer, usually July through September - the high temperature and humidity can be draining, especially being a tourist in the concrete jungle of Tokyo

    • Around New Years

  • The most comprehensive website for anything Japan travel related is www.japan-guide.com and is a solid starting point for popular spots but make sure to explore beyond for unique, lesser-known destinations

  • If flying into Tokyo, choose Haneda Airport (HND) over Narita (NRT) for quicker city access, but Narita can be a good option if flights are cheaper. Also, consider flying into Tokyo and out of Osaka or vice versa for itinerary flexibility

  • I consider the Japanese train system to be the best in the world in terms of efficiency, cleanliness, and reliability. There are many rail passes that are offered to tourists that can bring some cost savings. The most popular one, Japan Rail Pass or JR Pass, raised it’s price back in October 2023 to the point where it is not worth it for the majority of travellers. Use the Japan Guide Rail Pass calculator to see if it’s worth it for you

  • Speaking of trains, I always recommend finding accommodation within 5 minute walking distance of a train station for easy access

  • Amazon Japan is a fantastic option for essential items, with quick delivery, often within 24 hours or even the same day, to local convenience stores or lockers for easy pickup

Before you arrive:

  • Figure out your SIM card situation before hand and whether you will get an eSIM with your eSIM compatible phone or a physical SIM card. Separate article on this subject coming soon

  • Download your offline Google Maps not to waste data. I also like to save the places in the app beforehand. Google Maps is crucial in navigating around Japan and is extremely helpful, especially for using the train system. Inputting the name of the train station, for example Tokyo Station to Kyoto Station will bring up the departure times, total cost etc.
