Tokyo’s Best Skyline Views

As someone captivated by monumental architecture, I’ve encountered a few places that truly took my breath away. From the towering Burj Khalifa in Dubai and the intricate grandeur of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City to the iconic Duomo di Milano, each had its moment. In Tokyo, the city’s skyline is a sight to behold, especially from some of its best observation decks

The view from Roppongi Hills Mori Tower on the Tokyo City View outdoor observation deck

Top Two Observation Decks for Tokyo’s Skyline Views

  1. Tokyo City View (Observation Deck) at Roppongi Hills Mori Tower - located in the heart of Roppongi Hills, Tokyo City View offers two distinct observation decks. The indoor deck provides sweeping views of the city’s vast skyline, while the outdoor observation deck on the roof is the real gem, with a stunning 360-degree view. Standing on top of the Mori Tower offers an unobstructed panorama of Tokyo’s sprawling urban landscape, reaching as far as Mount Fuji on a clear day. The outdoor deck, however, is not always open, so it’s best to check ahead to confirm its status before your visit.

  2. Shibuya Sky located on the Shibuya Scramble Square building on top of Shibuya Station - rising 229 meters (750 feet) above Shibuya, Shibuya Sky is a 360-degree observation deck that combines panoramic views with an impressive vantage over the iconic Shibuya Crossing below. Located on top of Shibuya Scramble Square, this deck offers visitors an immersive skyline experience. Tickets must be reserved in advance, and sunset on a clear day is the prime time to visit, as the evening hues cast a magical glow over Tokyo’s cityscape

Other notable mentions:

  • Tokyo Skytree - although the view isn’t as impressive as from the other decks, Tokyo Skytree’s towering height of 634 meters (2,100 feet) makes it a remarkable sight. I recommend viewing it from the Asakusa neighborhood, particularly around Sensō-ji temple, where the juxtaposition of historic and modern Tokyo creates a unique experience

  • Tokyo Tower - often referred to as Japan’s Eiffel Tower, Tokyo Tower has stood as a city landmark since 1958. Though the view from its observation decks is not exceptional, the tower itself is a classic symbol of Tokyo.

  • Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building - located in Shinjuku, this observation deck offers a free view of Tokyo. While it doesn’t rival the paid decks, it’s a convenient and budget-friendly option for city views

  • Yokohama Landmark Tower - just a 45-minute train ride from Tokyo, this tower in Yokohama provides a superb view of Mount Fuji from the Sky Garden observation deck
