Japan Connectivity Guide
Before traveling to Japan, it’s essential to plan how you’ll stay connected. Internet access is crucial for navigation, so consider these options:
👍🏻 SIM card - this is the most cost-effective and efficient way to stay connected. Ordering a physical SIM card through Amazon Japan, especially one that uses a direct connection to a Japanese network, offers good pricing, ample data, and reliable local connectivity.
eSIM - though I haven’t personally used an eSIM, many friends recommend it highly. Reliable eSIM providers for Japan include Airalo, Nomad, Sakura, and Ubigi.
Pocket WiFi - once popular, Pocket WiFi has become less practical. It requires one person to carry and keep the device charged, which can be restrictive for groups wanting to explore independently. Pocket WiFi devices are also sometimes unreliable and need frequent restarting. With most modern phones supporting eSIM, a SIM card or eSIM is generally a better choice.
👎🏻 International Roaming Data from your current mobile provider - using international roaming from your current mobile provider is costly with limited data, so it’s best to avoid this option. A SIM or eSIM will give you better value and ease during your trip.
